Abstract

The demand for efficient and effective school leaders is a necessity in education. However, this need is more focused on the concept of leadership based on modern approaches rather than traditional ones. For instance, traditional leadership is often tied to position or authority, whereas modern leadership emphasises efforts to transform educational practices. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the perceptions of school leaders in both urban and rural areas regarding the modern concept of teacher leadership. Data were collected from four school leaders in urban areas and four school leaders in rural areas. The data were then analysed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed no significant differences in perception between urban and rural school leaders regarding teacher leadership. Both groups agreed on four main themes related to best practices in teacher leadership: teacher leaders as role models, teacher leaders as key supporters of competency development, teacher leaders as builders of collaborative culture, and teacher leaders as key supporters in providing educational resources. The implications of this study highlight the awareness among educational stakeholders that local school leaders share a perception of teacher leadership aligned with environmental changes, particularly within education.
