Impacts of Ṭāha Ḥussayn’s al-Ayyām on Arabic Literary Stories: a Study and Analysis of some Stories by Nigerian Authors

Abstract

ملخص

إنّ اهتمام الكتاب النيجيريين المبدعين باللغة العربية كان متركزا على الشعر ولم يعيروا النثر الأدبي عناية لائقة إلا متأخرا. تسعى هذه المقالة إلى مناقشة تأثير ثلاثيّة طه حسين الأيام في توجيه الكتاب النيجريين إلى الابداع في مجال النثر الأدبي خصوصا في فنّ كتابة الذكريات. وقد اتخذ هذا الكاتب المنهج الاستقرائي التحليلي لعرض النزعة ومناقشتها واكتشاف مدى تأثّر النيجيريين بالكاتب المصري. وقد أسفرت النتائج أن طه حسين هو الرائد والمشجع للمبدعين النيجيريين في مجال النثر الأدبي الحديث كما اكتشفت المقالة أن المبدعين النيجيريين أنشأوا يعربون عن خلفيتهم بعبارة سيالة شيقة ممتثلين بقدوتهم الأدبية. وأخيرا تعرفت المقالة على أن التعبير عن العاطفة الشعورية من نوع الذكريات يثير حيوية أدبية ويجدد التوجيه الخلقي في المجتمع. وقد اختتمت الدراسة أن التعبير الأدبي بالعربية لدى الكتاب النيجيريين قد بلغت مستوى يعكسون به التطورات المعاصرة وبالتالي يلزم دارسي العربية بنيجيريا أن يستغلوا الكتابة الأدبية للنمو الإنساني في تخصصهم.

Abstract

The attention given to literary prose among Nigerian Arabists has historically lagged behind that granted to poetry until very recently. This research posits that Ṭāha Ḥussayn’s seminal trilogy, al-Ayyām, served as the decisive springboard that propelled Nigerian Arabic writers into creative prose, specifically by embracing the memoir form. Adopting judgment sampling technique and text-based ethnography as data collection methods, the study embraced a qualitative design that utilized the descriptive analytical approach to analyse and evaluate the impact of the Egyptian on the Nigerian writers. Findings reveal Ṭāha Ḥussayn as the pioneer inspiration on the Arabic creative prose writers among Nigerian writers in Arabic. It is also discovered that individuals’ experiences are being expressed in flowing literary expression. Finally, it was found out that expressing emotional feelings in memoir form enhances societal moral rejuvenation. The study, therefore, concludes that Arabic literary expression has attained a standard capable of projecting contemporary developments; thereby highlighting the necessity for Arabists in Nigeria to further explore such writings to advance humanity in their field.
